Spectro Scientific recently expanded its SpectrOil 100 Series of elemental spectrometers to expedite machine condition monitoring and quality-control evaluations. The new spectrometers are engineered to provide quick, laboratory-precise measurement of elemental concentrations in a variety of fluid types. The ease of operation makes them ideal for use in laboratories, onsite inspections and maintenance environments where rapid test results are desired.

The series consists of two basic models: the SpectrOil 110, which provides a basic engine wear package, and the SpectrOil 120, which includes standard and extended range packages with the following options: wear metals, coolants, fuels and custom application packages.

Each model is designed to eliminate the delay and expense of offsite laboratory analyses. The analysis process involves no sample preparation or use of solvents or gases, reducing the cost per sample. The 30-second analysis time enables immediate multi-element results.

The spectrometers can detect and quantify the presence of elements that indicate machine wear or fluid contamination while also monitoring the depletion of additives, according to ASTM D-6595. In quality-control applications, the analyses monitor the composition and quality of petrochemicals from the crude state to the final blended product to ensure process integrity and guard against contamination.

The SpectrOil 100 Series uses rotating disc electrode (RDE) optical emission spectroscopy (OES) technology. This method employs carbon electrodes and high voltage electricity to convert a fluid sample into a plasma, which emits a unique spectrum of light. Charge-coupled device (CCD) cameras capture the light, while spectral analysis software detects the concentration of dozens of elements in solution, including particles as large as 10 microns.

"The new SpectrOil 100 Series expands the Spectro Scientific product line and increases performance, enabling users to perform rapid and accurate fluid analyses in their own facilities, in the most time- and cost-efficient way," said Robert Wopperer, Spectro Scientific vice president of business development. "The SpectrOil Series products reduce the complexity of testing lubrication oils and performance fluids, helping our customers better protect their valuable mechanical assets."
