Helicopter Crash Raises Questions for Gearbox Certification

The investigation into the fatal crash last month of a Sikorsky S-92 helicopter off Newfoundland shows the pilot descended slowly after reporting oil-pressure problems, perhaps because he believed the aircraft was built to fly 30 minutes without lubrication in its main gearbox. However, a Canadian newspaper reports the S-92 did not meet the "run-dry" specification.
