Lubrication Expert Receives ASTM International Charles B. Dudley Medal Award

ASTM International has presented the 2009 Charles B. Dudley Medal to Alan Riga, Ph.D., president and CEO of TechCon Inc. in Cleveland.

The Dudley award commemorates ASTM’s first president, honors research that leads to standardization and extends knowledge in a field of interest to the society, and recognizes meritorious contributions to society publications. Riga was recognized for his significant achievement as editor of STP 1326, “Oxidative Behavior of Materials by Thermal Analytical Techniques, 1997,” and as co-author of two papers published in the book.

A member of ASTM International since 1987, Riga serves on Committees D02 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants and E37 on Thermal Measurements, where he chairs Subcommittee E37.04 on Technical Programs. He has contributed to three other E37 special technical publications as an editor, author and symposium chair. The committee has recognized Riga’s work with two Awards of Appreciation (1994 and 2000) and with the ASTM Award of Merit and title of fellow in 1995.

An expert in the fields of chemical additives and lubricants, pharmaceuticals and polymers, and the characterization of these materials by thermal methods, Riga founded his consulting company, TechCon, in 1997, after spending 37 years as a senior research chemist at the Lubrizol Corporation in Wickliffe, Ohio. He holds bachelor of arts and master of science degrees in chemistry, and a Ph.D. in physical chemistry, all from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.

Riga is a research professor and faculty member at Cleveland State University, the University of Toledo and Case Western Reserve University, all in Ohio. He is also a visiting professor at the Institute of Chemistry of Sao Carlos at the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil, and a visiting scientist with NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland.

Outside ASTM International, Riga is a fellow of the North American Thermal Analysis Society and the Society of Plastics Engineers, a member of the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers, and a member emeritus of the American Chemical Society.
