VP of ExxonMobil's Washington, D.C., Office to Retire

R. D. (Dan) Nelson, vice president of Exxon Mobil Corporation’s Washington, D.C., office, on January 29 announced his intention to retire, effective April 1, 2009, after more than 32 years of service.

 

Nelson has been vice president of ExxonMobil’s Washington office and a vice president and officer of the corporation since 2004, and had previously held a variety of other senior positions with the company in the United States, the United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia.

 

“At a time of unprecedented public interest in energy issues, Dan Nelson represented ExxonMobil with distinction in sharing our perspectives with Congress, the executive branch and representatives of the business and policy communities on options to address the energy challenges our nation faces,” said Rex W. Tillerson, chairman and chief executive officer of Exxon Mobil Corporation.

 

Nelson joined Mobil Corporation as a supply analyst in New York in 1976, following service as an infantry officer in the United States Marine Corps.

 

During his career, Nelson held a variety of senior positions with the corporation, in the United States and internationally. These positions included a number of strategic analysis roles focused on Mobil’s Middle East operations; coordination manager for Mobil’s business operations with the Arabian-American Oil Company (Aramco); manager, Middle East region, Mobil Corporation; planning and analysis manager for the supply and trading organization in Mobil’s global headquarters in Fairfax, Va., and venture manager for the company’s liquefied natural gas projects. Following the ExxonMobil merger he was appointed chairman and chief executive officer of ExxonMobil Saudi Arabia Inc. Nelson was appointed to his current position in June 2004.

 

Nelson served as a director of several key ventures over the course of his career, including Saudi-Yanbu Petrochemical Company (Yanpet), Al Jubail Petrochemical Company (Kemya), Saudi Aramco-Mobil Refinery Company (Samref) and Saudi Aramco Lubricating Oil Refinery Company (Luberef). In addition, he has served as a director of several non-profit organizations, including Arena Stage, Meridian International Center, American Near East Refugee Aid, N Street Village, Middle East Policy Council and the Middle East Institute.

 

A native of Lincoln, Neb., Nelson is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. He also earned a master’s degree in business administration from George Washington University.
