ASTM Announces New Proficiency Testing Program

ASTM International recently announced a new proficiency testing program for biodiesel blends. The testing program is designed to allow laboratories to compare their performance with others to help improve performance.

The program provides labs with a statistical quality-assurance tool to compare their level of performance in the use of ASTM methods with other laboratories worldwide. Many labs also utilize the program to help gain accreditation.

The first scheduled cycle will take place in March 2019, with the others set for July and November. Each participating lab will receive a 1-gallon can containing a blend of B100 biodiesel and diesel fuel for each of the three test cycles conducted during the year. The labs will then measure and analyze acidity, density, flash point and other properties.

Testing must be performed within the participant’s lab facilities, but a lab does not need to perform all the tests within the program to participate. An annual registration fee is required.

ASTM International also announced the expansion of two existing programs for cetane and octane to six cycles. Currently, approximately 5,000 laboratories use ASTM’s statistical-quality assurance tools in the proficiency testing programs.
